SARCOA to hold Medicare enrollment help events soon

There are three upcoming enrollment events where local residents eligible for Medicare can receive free help in choosing among Medicare medical and prescription drug plans for 2012.

The events are sponsored by the Southern Alabama Regional Council on Aging (SARCOA), and will provide information and assistance concerning health insurance issues to Medicare beneficiaries of all ages.

Spokesperson Clayton Davis said there are two big reasons that people need to check their Medicare each year.

“The Medicare plan options change each year,” he said. “(Folks) find that one or more of their drugs may not be covered, or there is a change in their deductible or co-pay.”

During open enrollment, which runs through Dec. 7, all Medicare beneficiaries can enroll in any Medicare medical and prescription drug plan they choose for 2012.

Additionally, Davis said that a lot of residents might not realize is that they can get help because of their income.

Those eligible for Medicare whose household incomes are below $1,381 monthly for one-person and $1,858 monthly for a two-person household may be eligible for extra help that could reduce the cost of their medical and prescription drug coverage.

“We’re hoping that people will utilize our services,” he said. “We’re making it convenient for locals with three events.”

The first will be held Tues., Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Opp Senior Center. Another will be held Thurs., Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Andalusia Senior Center and Fri., Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Florala Senior Center. Read More
